While the outgoing model shares its underpinnings with the since-discontinued Fit hatchback, the new HR-V rides on the same platform as the 11th-generation Civic. Its wheelbase is up 1.7 inches and is 9.4 inches longer than before, making it just 2.3 inches shorter than the CR-V (a new CR-V is coming in 2023, but it could grow, too). Cargo volume is largely unchanged, with 24 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 55 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Sadly, the previous HR-V’s highly configurable folding rear seat, which lets you fold down the lower cushions for taller items, is gone, though the rear seats still fold down.

The HR-V’s standard powertrain, a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline engine, is shared with the Civic sedan and hatchback. It produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, better than the old HR-V’s 141-horsepower 1.8-liter, but small numbers by the segment’s standards. A continuously variable automatic transmission is the only transmission option, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive a $1,500 option.

The clean dashboard design is similar to the Civic, with a mesh cover for the air vents that extends across the center box and passenger side. There’s a new drive mode selector with Normal, Sport and Eco settings, and hill-descent control is standard, despite the HR-V’s lack of real off-road offerings.
Honda claims an EPA fuel economy rating of 27 mpg combined, or 28 mpg depending on configuration, which is slightly worse than the outgoing model, which earns 28-30 mpg. While Honda sells a different version of the HR-V in Europe that comes standard with a hybrid powertrain, we don’t think a hybrid version of the HR-V is on its way to the US. Honda talked only about future hybrid versions of the CR-V and Accord, as well as a new Civic hybrid that will replace the Insight.
Trim levels include LX, Sport and EX-L, with the Sport ($26,895) getting 18-inch wheels and black exterior trim for visual distinction. Every aspect of the exterior design is much more conventional, but thankfully the engine will gain even more power. That won’t take long, as the new model only produces 141 hp (105 kW) from its 1.8-liter four-cylinder. We cannot yet confirm exactly how much power the new car will produce.
Customers across the pond may find this strange, as Honda already introduced the HR-V there. However, this model is actually a completely different beast, so that doesn’t mean what we have here. To add to the confusion, Honda will also sell the North American HR-V in European markets starting next year, but in those places they’ll change the name to something else they haven’t announced yet.

We were able to find three different HR-Vs already found on salvage auction sites with minimal mileage.
The first to be included in the insurance car auctions is a white Sport model with just 123 miles (198 km) on the odometer. If you were to look at it from the driver’s side, you might not think it had anything other than a misaligned hood, but you’d be wrong. Go around the other side of the SUV and you’ll see a badly damaged front bumper that’s partially ripped off, a bent hood, a wheel arch liner that’s fallen off the body, and any other hidden damage that might be under the skin.
The second HR-V on Copart’s list is a blue EX-L model with just 328 miles (528 km) on the odometer. Like the last one, this HR-V looks fine from one side, but go around the car and you’ll see that the entire driver’s side front quarter is completely destroyed, including the bumper, headlights, hood and hood, and fender.
