SUV of the Year competition, so one wonders if Honda will make the latest version of the three-time SUVOTY champion.

The bold design makes it impossible to confuse the 2023 Honda CR-V with its predecessors, but some familiar cues return. The vertical grid expands into the hexagonal shape you saw earlier. Likewise, the accent strip running down the front is straight and finished in either chrome or black. Slim LED headlights with a subtle curve.

In profile, the creased shoulder line and angular window trim give the new 2023 Honda CR-V an attractive look. At the rear, the L-shaped taillights are reminiscent of the previous CR-V, but the new ones include indicators and additional LED details. Depending on the configuration, 18- or 19-inch discs are installed.

If you’ve seen Civic or HR-V dashboards, the CR-V will look familiar. It’s topped with a fan of honeycomb, but the textured finish below is the highlight here. The three-dial HVAC control panel looks similar to those used on other Hondas.

Likewise, the 2023 Honda CR-V is equipped with a 7.0-inch cluster display complemented by a 7.0- or 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. There’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and their wireless capabilities go hand-in-hand with the big screen. Front-facing USB-C and USB-A ports are standard; the high-end bezel adds a wireless charging pad and two additional USB-C ports. The available 12-speaker Bose unit is the first branded audio system offered by Honda for the CR-V.

There is no copy and paste option like the center console dashboard. It places the gear selector in a box with switches such as the drive mode selector and parking brake. Around it are neatly placed cubbies and cupholders, and Honda says the 9.0-litre is the largest of any armrest in the CR-V segment.

A new subframe gives the front seats more lateral support; Two-way waist adjustment is standard. The rear doors open nearly perpendicular to the body to help access the rear seats, which get 0.6 inches of legroom and eight adjustable seatback angles. This CR-V has slightly more cargo space, with 36.3 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and 76.5 cubic feet when they’re folded. An adjustable trunk floor adds versatility to non-hybrid models.

Honda’s Global Architecture, which underpins the latest Civic and HR-V, promises to improve the poise and handling of the new CR-V. It rides on a 1.6-inch longer wheelbase and is 2.7 inches longer overall, with slight increases in width and height. The body structure is 15 percent stiffer in terms of torsion, allowing for suspension calibration aimed at better ride comfort and steering response.

To improve visibility, Honda moved the side mirrors from the A-pillar to the top of the front doors. The base of the A-pillar is 1.4 inches down, 2.8 inches out and 4.7 inches back to allow for better visibility through the windshield.

As before, the CR-V’s standard engine is 190 hp. and a 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 that makes 179 lb-ft of torque. Revisions to the turbocharger and cylinder head result in a wider torque range that peaks earlier. After the automatic CVT, front-wheel drive became standard, and an available all-wheel drive system can now distribute torque evenly between the axles. Since Honda hasn’t talked about weight reduction, this generation, like the new HR-V, is likely to be heavier and more fuel-efficient.

Given the price of gasoline these days, 50 percent adoption of Honda’s planned 2023 CR-V hybrid engine seems likely. Still centered around the 2.0-liter I-4, it now has two electric motors for propulsion and regeneration instead of one doing double duty. Powertrain torque rises to 247 lb-ft, the highest figure in a CR-V. Combined engine and engine power dropped from 212 to 204, but Honda says changes in ISO testing standards are to blame for the discrepancy.

Either way, this setup allows serial or parallel hybrid operation. A locking clutch remains between the two electric motors with different locking points for stable driving and towing. Yes, the CR-V Hybrid now has an official tow rating for the first time: 1,000 pounds. Although the power unit cannot provide single-pedal movement, handlebar-mounted paddles control recuperative force to simulate engine braking.

Honda sees the hybrid powertrain as the performance of the range. That’s reflected in the 2023 CR-V trim lineup, which pairs the gas engine with the entry-level EX trims and EX-L leather trim, and retains the hybrid system for the style-focused Sport and Sport Touring trims. As such, each new CR-V Hybrid will feature black rims, a front fascia with intake port accents, and rectangular tailpipes. The 2023 Honda HR-V Sport has a slightly quicker steering gear ratio, a potential feature that makes the new CR-V Sport trims livelier in addition to electric torque.

When we asked Honda representatives about the possibility of a 2023 CR-V TrailSport, the silence spoke volumes. This trim will be a natural addition to the off-road sub-brand. Orange interior stitching on the CR-V Sport and Sport Touring is a signature detail on the Passport and Pilot TrailSport models. Honda will only reveal that the CR-V’s rigid structure will provide a stronger foundation for the various potential suspension setups. We can’t imagine the company’s strong rivals like the Subaru Forester Wilderness, Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road and Kia Sportage X-Pro flying off dealership lots.

The driver assistance and active safety features in the standard Honda Sensing package have been expanded and improved. Blind spot monitoring is now included on all trims, and sensors for adaptive cruise control and lane keeping have a wider field of view. Already very good, Honda says the systems’ responses have been designed to feel even more natural. New hill descent control and snow mode make driving in difficult conditions easier.

The IIHS has awarded the CR-V a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ every year since 2015, and we can’t imagine Honda letting that streak end with the new CR-V. It got new front airbags specially designed to protect the occupants’ heads, front knee airbags and rear side airbags.

Every sixth generation Honda CR-V is produced at the manufacturer’s plants in the USA and Canada. No official pricing has been set, but the CR-V EX is expected to start around $30,000; LX trimming directed to the previous value is stopped. The new CR-V Hybrid should cost several thousand dollars more. With dealer deliveries set to begin soon, we know the 2023 Honda CR-V is a strong contender, an impressive finalist, or an unprecedented three-time SUV of the Year winner.

Although the CR-V will be larger until 2023, the additional dimensions will not be significantly different. It is 69 mm longer than before, with a parking length of 4,694 mm. It is a product that controls hair growth.

The extra length means more interior space, including more rear-seat legroom. This also means more cargo space: 1028L behind the rear seats and a whopping 2166L with the rear seats folded. Non-hybrid versions allow you to lower the rear boot floor, which is useful when the seats are upright to help accommodate longer items.

The new CR-V’s cabin looks similar to the new HR-V launched earlier this year, as well as the latest Civic. It’s a more upscale look than the previous CR-V, with better materials and details like the mesh dashboard. A 7.0-inch touchscreen is standard and offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 9.0-inch version with tall bezels makes these features wireless and gives buyers the option of wireless charging.

New driver assistance technology includes Honda Sensing as standard with a new wide-angle camera and radar sensors. Honda says this improves the effectiveness of collision avoidance by better recognizing objects such as pedestrians.
