The Hybrid Powered 2023 Honda Cr V Sport Touring Is A Mixed Bag On The Road

The bolder design won’t confuse the 2023 Honda CR-V with its predecessor, but some familiar cues are back. The vertical grid unfolds over the hexagonal shape seen above. Similarly, the trim strip at the front is straighter and finished in chrome or black. The slim LED headlights feature a subtle curve.

From the side, the creased shoulder lines and angular window surrounds give the new 2023 Honda CR-V an edgy look. From the rear, the L-shaped taillights are reminiscent of the previous CR-V, but the new taillights are sharper and include additional LED accents. Wheels measure 18 or 19 inches depending on trim.

If you’ve seen the dashboard of a Civic or HR-V, the CR-V’s dashboard will look familiar. Honeycomb mesh vents run through it, but the textured trim underneath sets it apart. The HVAC control panel with three dials looks identical to what other Hondas use.

Likewise, the 2023 Honda CR-V has a 7-inch instrument cluster screen complemented by a 7- or 9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are present, and wireless capability is accompanied by a larger screen. The center console is not copy and paste like the control panel. It encapsulates the gear selector in a dash that contains switches like the drive mode selector and parking brake. The cubbies and cupholders around them are well placed, and Honda says the 9.0-litre capacity of the armrest box makes it the largest in the CR-V segment.

A new interior frame provides more lateral support for the front seats; two-way lumbar adjustment is standard. The rear doors open almost perpendicular to the body, making it easy to access the rear seats, which gain 0.6 inches of legroom and eight adjustable backrest angles. This CR-V has a bit more cargo space: 36.3 cubic feet behind the second-row seats and 76.5 cubic feet with them folded. An adjustable cargo floor adds to the versatility of the non-hybrid models.

To improve outward visibility, Honda moved the mirrors from the A-pillars to the top of the front doors. The A-pillar bases are 1.4 inches lower, 2.8 inches out and 4.7 inches back for better windshield visibility.

Given recent gas prices, Honda’s projected 50 percent adoption rate of the 2023 CR-V’s enhanced hybrid powertrain seems feasible. It’s still centered around the 2.0-liter I-4, now with two electric motors, one for propulsion and one for regeneration, instead of one for both duties. Drive motor torque rises to 247 lb-ft, the highest ever in a CR-V. However, the combined power of the engine and electric motor has dropped from 212 to 204, but Honda says changes in ISO testing standards are responsible for the difference.

Regardless, this configuration allows hybrid series or parallel operation. The lock-up clutch between the two electric motors remains the same, with different lock-up points for regular driving and towing. Yes, the CR-V Hybrid now has an official tow rating for the first time: 1,000 pounds. While the powertrain doesn’t offer EV-style single-pedal drive, steering wheel-mounted paddles control the amount of regeneration to mimic engine braking.

Honda sees the hybrid powertrain as a performance offering for the range. That’s reflected in the 2023 CR-V’s interior architecture, which pairs the gas engine with entry-level EX and leather-spec EX-L trims, reserving the hybrid powertrain for the style-focused Sport and Sport Touring trims. As a result, every new CR-V Hybrid will feature black wheels, a front fascia with air intakes and rectangular exhaust tips. The 2023 Honda HR-V Sport has a slightly quicker steering ratio, a potential feature that could make the new CR-V Sport trim feel more alive in addition to its electric torque.

Honda would only divulge the fact that the CR-V’s stiffer frame provides a firmer base for various possible suspension configurations. We can’t imagine the company getting confused as tough competitors like the Subaru Forester Wilderness, Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV and Kia Sportage X-Pro take off from dealerships.

The driver assistance and active safety features of the standard Honda Sensing suite have been expanded and improved. All trims now include blind-spot monitoring, and sensors for adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist get a wider field of view. Honda says the systems already respond so well that it feels more natural. New Descent Control and Snow Mode simplify driving in tricky conditions.

The IIHS has named the CR-V a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ every year since 2015, and we can’t imagine Honda letting that streak end with the new CR-V. It has new front airbags designed specifically to protect occupants’ heads, front knee airbags and rear side airbags.

Every sixth-generation Honda CR-V will be built at the manufacturer’s plants in the United States and Canada. Official pricing will be announced soon, but we expect the CR-V EX to start around $30,000; the previous value-oriented LX version has been removed.
