The Honda CR-V may not look like a new sports car or a hot-blooded supercar, but in fact, this car has officially entered its sixth generation with the release of the 2023 model.

The new face of the 2023 Honda CR-V doesn’t look too amazing. We got a glimpse last May when an image from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was leaked online.
Now, we feel better in the large mesh grille and add the same rugged feeling of the Honda Rgeline car.
The lower headlights further emphasize the size of the grille, and the top Sport and Sport Touring hybrid models also get aggressive front and rear fascias.
Honda didn’t upgrade the body panels to give a bigger impression. The new Honda CR-V is 2.7 inches longer and almost half an inch wider than its predecessor.

This SUV has a 1.6 inch long wheelbase. While that may sound like a lot, the changes make the sixth-generation Honda CR-V the biggest of them all.
Rear-seat passengers enjoy additional legroom, and there’s about 26.3 cubic feet (744 liters) of cargo space in the back.
Borrowing heavily from the Honda Civic, the new Honda CR-V carries the same sleek design and familiar print of the 7-inch screen mounted in the center of the dashboard.
A 7-inch digital instrument cluster greets the driver, and higher-end models feature a larger 9-inch infotainment screen.

Gray and black interior colors are standard, and leather seats are available. Honda says the CR-V’s center console offers the most storage or storage space of any vehicle in its class.
Tech-wise, Apple CarPlay and Andro Auto are standard across the board, as are Honda Sensing safety and driver assistance systems.
Due for production in 2023, it includes a new wide-angle camera with a 90-degree field of view and a 120-degree viewing radar system.
Blind spot monitoring also comes as standard, and there’s Honda Traffic Jam Assist with low-speed braking and signal recognition.

When exploring off-road, Honda’s Real-Time AWD updates the system and offers multiple driving modes depending on the conditions.
It started with the EX, followed by the EX-L, both with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 190 horsepower (142 kilowatts).
Sport and Sport Touring models round out the Honda CR-V trim levels, each with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain.
In fact, less compared to the previous model (204 hp now, while the previous model was 212 hp). But the torque increases to 247 pound-feet (335 kilowatts).

The 2023 Honda CR-V Sport Touring isn’t a plug-in hybrid, but it has all the benefits of driving a battery-powered EV if you keep the right foot. Around town, it’s nice to hear and feel Honda’s fourth-generation twin-motor hybrid system whispering and providing ample lift. Depending on the size of the load—such as the ability to tow less or take off more quickly—the CR-V will retain all-wheel drive or engage the gasoline engine to assist.
This internal combustion unit delivers as much as 145 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque to the cause, and the transition from electric-only to gas-burning mode is seamless. There is no delay. Depending on your speed and where you’re driving, sometimes you can’t tell if it’s on or not unless you look at the dash and see the green “EV” light is off. It even went full EV at times when I was cruising down US-101 in California, depending on how fast I was going and what the grade was.

At full tilt, the CR-V Sport Touring sprints to 60 mph from a standstill in about 7.5 seconds. Its power output is 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque with the gas and electric systems working simultaneously, and it still feels quick enough to cruise down the highway, even on some steep mountain climbs. Thanks to the electric motors, the torque makes it feel more powerful than it was.
Honda is doing a lot to increase interest in the potential of an electric car. A new feature I’m digging is on the shifter, just below the D-B mode. This increases the depth of the braking system, making it useful for single pedal riding. In addition, when you hold it in D, the paddle shifters on the steering wheel will not change gears (or, increase the resistance of the CVT), but instead adjust the driving quality with one pedal. 1 is default, 2 equalizes deceleration, and 3 to 4 increases further to help the car stop. If that sounds difficult, it is. I chose to keep it in B only.
The B has great appeal for anyone who wants to avoid using the brake pedal for every bit of deceleration, including those of us who prefer a manual transmission. It doesn’t offer as much resistance as I’ve heard my colleagues report about electric vehicles, but it’s quick enough to recognize that it’s there. Plus, if you’re like me where you get irritated by drivers who hit the brake pedal too hard and would like to practice what you preach, B is there.
It’s also a solid idea of what the EV driving experience is like for consumers considering finally parking one in their driveway, which is Honda’s goal behind the CR-V hybrid. Show them the benefits of EVs, build interest, and then prepare affordable EVs for them to buy when the time comes.

The 2023 CR-V Hybrid features a 15 percent increase in structural rigidity, especially in the floor and underbody components. This is to prepare for the additional weight in these areas of the hybrid system, but when it is helped by the strong subframes, and the MacPherson front and independent rear suspension, it makes the crossover surprisingly fun to drive.
Part of the test was a winding road through the wineries north of Santa Barbara, and the CR-V felt confident going along it. The CR-V has a Sport mode, but what it really does is produce a more interesting roar and make small adjustments to the throttle – either Sport or Normal are up to the task. Body roll was well controlled, steering action and feel were surprisingly good, and the brake pedal felt solid. In fact, the chassis wrote checks at times that the 235/55/19 all-season tires had a hard time restoring, which is a strong sign that the chassis engineers really put in the work.
If Honda ever wanted to build a more exciting CR-V hybrid, it wouldn’t take much more than throwing on some slightly stickier tires, wringing more juice from both powertrains and adding more fun to its mudder. Based on what the brand has achieved with the latest Civic Si, this should be considered. It even has a CVT installed, which I never thought I would say.
