Based on the latest Honda Civic hatchback, the new 2023 Civic Type R trades the racer style of the previous generation model for a more refined but no less serious look. The new Type R is longer, lower and wider than before and is better integrated with aerodynamic elements that increase downforce and reduce drag.
Highlights of the design changes include revised front and rear fenders, a honeycomb grille to match the car’s interior, revised side skirts, an exclusive rear spoiler with basket handles and a new rear diffuser panel with the Type R signature in the middle. three circular outlets. The car gets new 19-inch lightweight matte black tires tucked under flared fenders, and the 2023 Type R has a wider tailgate not shared with the regular Civic hatch.

Honda also equips the new Type R with deeply bolstered front seats that feature racing harness pass-throughs and are wrapped in red faux suede. The shade matches both the interior and the carpet. Each car’s serialized Type R plate adorns the dashboard, displaying the unique production number.
Honda claims the new Civic Type R offers “the best driving experience in the hot hatch segment.” To support this position, it supports the new Type R with a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, a revised 6-speed manual transmission, an improved cooling system and a reworked exhaust system.
Honda says the new Type R makes 315 hp at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque between 2,600 and 4,000 rpm. Previously, the Type R produced 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Additionally, the company says the engine is more responsive than before and the new Type R is faster. It has a redesigned turbocharger and increased air intake flow rate; it breathes more easily through the new exhaust system. Historically, Honda has tried to maximize the Civic Type R’s performance by reducing weight. At the time of writing, the company has not confirmed any steps it might take to reduce the overall weight of the new 2023 model.
Safety features aren’t what sell the Civic Type R, so Honda hasn’t yet decided what the new model will include. However, it’s fair to assume that it will feature Civic’s latest Advanced Compatibility Technology vehicle architecture and a new front airbag design to better protect against head injuries.
The new Type R also features the Honda Sensing Collection of advanced driver assistance systems. (An adaptive cruise control button on the steering wheel provides it.)
